Do I need to register my small business in Nigeria?

The first step required from every person or entity doing business in Nigeria is registering that business or company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria. Currently the business registration process can be carried out online via the CAC company online registration portal, either by the individual or usually through the CAC Accredited Agents. The CAC Accredited Agents are majorly lawyers, who are experienced in the process of  legally setting up businesses, companies and Associations in the government approved manner.


What documents are required to register a business name?

The registered address of the business. National means of Identification documents of the proprietor(s) or partners such as International Passports, National Identity Cards, Driver’s licenses, etc. Name reservation approval note from the CAC. Objects of the business.

How long does it take to register a Business Name with CAC in Nigeria?

How do I get my CAC certificate?

What is the difference between business name and company?

A company limited by shares is required to have a director(s) and shareholder(s) while a business name is only required to have a sole proprietor or partners (proprietors). A Company limited by shares is a separate legal entity that is distinct from its shareholders and directors. The liabilities of a limited liability company is limited to the amount of shares owned by the share holders or assets of the company if any.

How do I know if my business name is registered with the CAC?

Visit the CAC’s website. Scroll down the site and click on “Public Search” Insert the RC Number of the company you wish to search (if known) or the full name of the company in the search box and click on “Search” If the company is registered, the result will display the full company name, RC number, and office address.

What comes after CAC registration?

After your business registration/incorporation, there are still some post-incorporation filings which must be regularly undertaken at the CAC. These include the annual report which you must file annually; changes in your business address or other company information. Registering with the FIRS for VAT Collection  or Tax Remittance purposes, do well to ask the EBC Consultant for proper guidance after your business has been duly registered.

Does CAC certificate expire?

Although Certificates of Nigerian companies do not expire once registered and are not subject to renewal, however, all businesses or companies registered in Nigeria are required to file annual returns with the CAC. This can be filed by an accredited agent on behalf of the company
